Prelude to Grass Carp

the shadow that haunts me
Damn grass carp. After last year, I built up some grass carp confidence. False confidence. I've thrown the box at em. More than once. Carp flies, nymphs, dry flies, terrestrials. Hooked and lost a couple but mostly harassed them. I can get them to sniff a dry fly but can't get a solid gulp. Pattern-shmattern, I've thrown everything. Grass carp glory will make it's return sooner or later. Hopefully sooner. 30" grass carp on a dry fly...

  1. I had to laugh... The first sentence said it perfectly! They are the most frustrating fish I've ever fly fished for. Seeing such big fish keeps me trying and coming back for more punishment.

  2. Ha! Me too! I proposed a theory with Chris at Missouri Flies that perhaps wild grass carp may be more aggressive than their sterile pond cousins. I mean, come on!

  3. It's taken me two seasons to catch my 26 pound grass carp. Yes I've had several sniffs as well and finally he took a black deer hair fly resembling floating food or mulberry. Keep trying thats part of all the fun an dreaming about the day he takes your fly.

  5. My buddy Randy, who also has the world record grass carp on the fly rod, like 54 lbs, doesn't fish after May, says once the algae blooms they no longer seem interested in flies.

  6. about a week ago there were a couple hex dropping. I tossed a hex pattern and got two really good takes but they didn't get hooked. They are so subtle with their feeding.

Grass carp are so awesome!!! My good friend and great angler Jared found an off white, foam spider pattern. We cut the legs off and it looks very similar to a seed floating on the surface. Most days we get our butts kicked but we have had 3 or 4 days were we have managed to hook and land multiple fish each.
