Bronzies, B-days, & Bach Bash

Started my 26th b-day off with some smallies! Hit the creek at 6:45 and caught plenty before I caught up with Leusink at 7:45. Then it was time to head to Ames for Lubber's bach bash. 4 bachelors getting hitched in May = 23 guys celebrating. We caught the ISU spring scrimmage and then it was crazy time out at the cabin. When I say crazy I mean weird crazy, like bachelor olympics where the 4 bachs compete for the chance to graduate to the next banana hammock. I hadn't laughed so hard in a long time.

This was a big smallie.

Quillback!

Fished a new creek today. Found a large school of quillback and redhorse. They're doing their spring spawning. This marks the largest fish I've caught on my 4wt. Would have liked to get a redhorse on the list. I think I'd better try to get one while they're spawning. Certainly better odds when you have a pool of 50 suckers =) Fished a wollybugger and trailed with a beadhead nymph. Lost a couple hookups on the nymph. I need to tie some carp flies!

Good Friday!

A nice way to start Easter weekend! Leu and I hookin into some smallies. Leu picked up warmwater fly fishing last summer. He's come a long way, from the whiplash cast to being able to throw a bugger cross the creek. These 12 inch fish put a good bend in the 4 wt. All fish were caught on black buggers, they didn't go for purple or green.

A Small-mouth lead

Smallies! It's 55 degrees out today, tomorrow we've got a winter weather advisory. Good ol Iowa weather. The bite was on today. Find the rocks and you find the smallies. This clear creek runs into the Cedar River. I lost my first 2 on a crawdad pattern and then stuck with this leach pattern. Casting across the water, mending the line, and getting to the bottom seemed to work best. There is another creek running into the Cedar about 2 miles down from this one, I scoped it out today and was turned off by the No Trespassing / Fishing signs. I'll have to get the kayak out.
