More Black River Gar

Very low water conditions on the Black River make it easier to reach the channel-dwelling gar, which are larger than the gar I typically find in the backwaters. This fish took a fly made of four strands of nylon rope and a bunch of red, green, blue and silver flashabou tied on a metal ring.

  2. Another nice one! I'd love to see a pic of the rope fly. I've made some and caught shortnose on them, and would like to see how yours might differ. About how long do you make yours? I've tied mine mostly 4"-6".

  4. Rope flies are sweet!

I'll try to get a photo up of some of mine, they aren't pretty. 4 inches is about right for good casting. You can certainly make them longer. Longer flies are more difficult to pull out of their teeth before release. And you want to make sure you get all of the rope out of their teeth becasue their jaws have not evolved to open strongly. So if you leave some rope in their mouth they might not be able to open their mouth and could die. You probably know that already.
