Pike on the Fly

Fishing in the city, you never know who's gonna show up. Yesterday I setup in this spot and shortly after arrival I was surrounded by 3 other fisherman. They gave me about 15 feet for a back cast and about 30 feet of water to fish. I had to just laugh and move to a different spot. I suppose I could have resumed my backcast and caught a redneck. Anyway, that's not my style. They only fished for about 20 minutes. Shortly after getting back to the spot I hooked this nice pike.

  1. That is the sort of thing that helped me away from our tailwater trout and concurrently to carp, which I was becoming quite interested in anyway. About the pike. Nice fish this one! And, concerning my last post, I did NOT mean to disparage your fish! I don't any fish. We have a native large minnow, the pike minnow actually, (previously the squawfish, I hated that name,) that is as its namesake, a predator, hits really hard, fights some then, and picks up steam before landing it. I realize that some bucket biologist will aid its arrival here eventually, and I'll embrace fishing for it, but we have native trout in trouble and my experience in Alaska shows me that trout water is no problem for them. In any case, you are into good fishing and I'm pleased for you.

  2. Hey Gregg – if there were trout in my local river I wouldn't be a fan of the Pike sharing the water. As for fishing shoulder to shoulder. Give me a small stream where I can fish without seeing anyone. Or a backwater for carp. I'm in the same boat as you. Cheers! John

  4. Can you just see monsters cruising around when you are up on that bridge looking into the water?

  5. n.taylor - I haven't seen any fish from the bridge. But then again I haven't spent much time looking down from it. The cold season is usually the only time of year this river is clear enough to see fish. I did look down from the bridge on my last visit and made some mental notes of sand bars, currents, various depths. If the river was this clear in the summer the fishing would be tremendous.

  8. Very cool John. Sadly I think the long rod is put away until March for me. Bring on the short rods!
