Tailing Cats

"It's raining hard". This was my wife's proclamation last night ~ 2AMish. The proclamation woke me and all I could think was -- I bet the fish will be in the flats. This is one of the effects of having this addiction to fly fishing. It creeps into your mind at any moment. I can't look at a weather forecast without thinking of how it will affect my fishing, even if no fishing is planned. So I got out early thinking I would find tailing carp and found tailing cats.

  4. I hear what your saying about watching the weather. Anytime I see a storm approaching I get this crazy itch to head out and catch some fish while the lightning is striking. Those are some nice looking catfish for sure. Well done. Tight LInes.

  7. The shallow waters have been brutally warm. I think last night's rain triggered things this morning. I had plenty of opportunities at red tails but don't get the impression that I was hammering them. Only hooked up with this one. I've caught some big cats on tackle and can only imagine a 10lb catfish on a fly rod.

  8. Fun... lots of fun. I've only caught a handful of catfish on the fly, but it sure is a blast.

  9. I went to the same spot this morning to see if the cats would be there. Right off the bat I found one cat with dorsal sticking out of the water. Tossed a lead eye bugger from about as far as I can cast, landed it 8inches from his head - slow slow retrieve; fish on! Gotta love when it comes together like that. Fished for about an hour and didn't see another fin.

nice blog, i share your addiction and was hoping pick your brain a little or at least point me in the right direction. i live in fl and fish for snook and redfish most of the time so all i have is 8 and 9 weights with floating lines. i am going to be visiting family in north liberty in a couple weeks and i didn't know if i should pack some gear. are there any fly shops in the area? i ran a search but did not find much. any help would be appreciated.

  11. Anonymous - no fly shops close to North Liberty. Lots of lakes, ponds, and rivers around NL. The 8wt with floating line will work fine. Bass would be the easiest target. Email me if you want to meet up for some early morning carp fishing.

  13. Nice, I just hooked up with a cat yesterday. I think the extreme heat has got them on the move. I have never seen them tailing that must have been neat. Great blog by the way. I look forward to following.
